O.ABOOTTY
O.Abootty, a well-known English language columnist and author, was born in Kannur City, Kannur District, Kerala, India on 13 May 1957 to Acharakath Parakkat Mammu (Thalassery) and Ovinnakath Mariyambi (Kannur). He was educated at MM Uloom UP School (now known as DIS Girls Higher Secondary School), Kannur City and Govt City High School (now known as Govt City Higher Secondary School), Kannur City. After high school study he discontinued his formal education and dedicated most of his time to the study of the English language, especially grammar, with the help of a large number of English language books. It was while he was a pupil in Class VI that he took a great fancy to English. After acquiring a fairly good knowledge of English he started teaching English. For the past 30 years he has been teaching English. Now he teaches English at DIS Arabic College, Kannur.
As a student in Class IX, he started writing articles. His first article was published in the Chandrika Week-end Supplement from Kozhikkode. After leaving school, he started writing articles on various subjects in different periodicals. Later he concentrated on writing only about English. He has written so many columns on English in various periodicals. He is credited with starting the first Question-Answer Column on English in a Malayalam periodical, "Career" from Kollam. He wrote the column in that magazine for more than 15 years, until its publication discontinued. Now he has been writing the same column in another format in Malayalam Manorama Thozhilveethi Weekly for the last two years. His articles on English have been published in some language-oriented magazines from the US and the UK.
He is the first person to introduce recreational linguistics to the Keralites through his columns and books. His books blazed a trail in the branch of recreational English for the Keralites.
He lives in Kannur City with his wife and three children. He has a brother, O. Usman, who was a journalist and once a famous sports-scribe.
